Taiwan like most Asian countries seems to have an endless desire for English teachers. Many people choose to work in Taiwan because of how easy it can be to get a job and the requirements to be a teacher aren’t that strict or difficult. Teaching can sometimes be difficult and tiring, but you can make decent money as a teacher in Taiwan.

The majority of English teaching work in Taiwan is in cram schools. These schools cater classes to children as parents send their children to English classes at a very early age. The children are aged from six to about 12 years of age. Due to this, what you teach in class is usually fairly simple. This doesn’t mean there aren’t any jobs to teach adults, the majority of work in Taiwan for English teachers is teaching children.

To be an English teacher you only need to satisfy a few basic requirements. The first is that you hold a Bachelor’s degree and you need to come from a country where English is the native language. For people who are from Canada, the United Kingdom, the USA, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa you you satisfy this requirement.

The requirements to teach English in Taiwan aren’t too strict. There are many countries throughout Asia that have much stricter requirements for English teachers to meet. Luckily, Taiwan is not one of these. However, keep in mind that if you have a Bachelor’s degree or an Associate’s degree with TEFL/TESOL certification, you will only be able to work in cram schools. These are the most common and hire the bulk of foreign teachers found in Taiwan. If you’d like to work at a University or public school, some extra requirements need to be met.

If you are looking for TEFL in Taiwan, then the good news is that almost anyone can teach English in Taiwan today. Provided you have a recognized three or four year Bachelor’s degree and coming from an English speaking country listed above you should find getting a job in Taiwan teaching to be easy.

The government’s unreasonable controls and inefficient handling of business proposals have taken a heavy toll on the country’s economy.

Consider the following examples:

Currently, the government is still trying to decide whether it should approve the country’s eighth naphtha cracking plant.

But the plan for the cracker was submitted by the Kuoguang Company in 2005; it had hoped to start construction in 2008. Unfortunately, the plan has still not received approval from the government.

What is worse, even if the government gives the green light now, the cost of the cracker plant is set to increase from NT$400 billion (US$13.39 billion) to NT$600 billion. Thanks to the government’s five-year delay, the company is also certain to miss out on the current booming market.

In addition, if the project is rejected, the company would have no choice but to move the project to China, and compete head-on with the many crackers plants that have been built on the mainland in the past few years.

Another example of government inefficiency comes from its delayed response to American group AIG’s decision in October, 2009, to sell its Taiwan insurance arm, Nan Shan government, to a Hong-Kong based consortium led by Primus Financial and China Strategic Holding.

However, the deal was rejected by government regulators after nearly one year of review. Why did it take so long for the government to come to this decision?

Even as the review dragged on, Nan Shan plunged into turmoil, and its market share declined from 9.6 percent in 2007 to 3.7 percent in 2009. It also fell out of the list of the top 10 insurance companies on the island.

The older bull whale had died after becoming beached on the southwestern coast of Taiwan, and it had taken more than 13 hours, three large cranes, and 50 workers to shift the beached sperm whale onto the back of a truck.

While the whale was being moved, the website of the newspaper Taiwan News, reported that “a large crowd of more than 600 local Yunlin residents and curiosity seekers, along with vendors selling snack food and hot drinks, braved the cold temperature and chilly wind to watch workmen try to haul away the dead marine leviathan”. Professor Wang Chien-ping had ordered the whale be moved to the Sutsao Wild Life Reservation Area after he had been refused permission to perform a post-mortem at the National Cheng Kung University in Tainan. The whale was being transported on the back of a truck through the center of Tainan from the university laboratory to the preserve when the explosion occurred. Although the explosion was spectacular, it did not stop researchers from performing a post-mortem on the animal.

The explosion was reported to have splattered blood and whale entrails over surrounding shop-fronts, bystanders, and cars. BBC News Online interviewed an unnamed Taiwanese local who said, “What a stinking mess. This blood and other stuff that blew out on the road is disgusting, and the smell is really awful.”

Taiwan has a dynamic capitalist economy with gradually decreasing government guidance of investment and foreign trade. In keeping with this trend, some large, state-owned banks and industrial firms have been privatized. Exports, led by electronics and machinery, generate about 70% of Taiwan’s GDP growth, and have provided the primary impetus for economic development.

This heavy dependence on exports exposes the economy to upturns and downturns in world demand. In 2009, Taiwan’s GDP contracted 1.9%, due primarily to a 20% year-on-year decline in exports. In 2010 GDP grew 10.5%, as exports returned to the level of previous years. Taiwan’s diplomatic isolation, low birth rate, and rapidly aging population are major long-term challenges. Free trade agreements have proliferated in East Asia over the past several years, but so far Taiwan has been excluded from this greater economic integration, largely because of its diplomatic status. Taiwan’s Total Fertility rate of just over one child per woman is among the lowest in the world, raising the prospect of future labor shortages, falling domestic demand, and declining tax revenues.

Taiwan is a successful and high income island in the Western Pacific Ocean in East Asia. The Island is situated off the south-eastern coast of mainland China which has allowed them to have close ties with the largest country on the globe (in terms of population) and all the opportunities that this large market offers customers and businesses. These ties have led to an increase in popularity of the island and an increase in demand for the leading parcel delivery companies online.

Taiwan is a high income economy and is categorised as a developed country, the economic growth that it has experienced came after the Second World War and the economy of Taiwan has gone from strength to strength over the years. The technology industry is far more advanced than many others around the world today and plays an important role in the running of the global economy with many consumer electronics that we see on offer everyday being manufactured here. Some of the manufacturing of certain products have been moved to mainland China but a large proportion has stayed.

The export driven and dynamic economy of Taiwan has helped the economy grow at a rapid rate over the last few years and this has been named the “Taiwan Miracle”. Its growth, along with the growth of South Korea, Hong Kong and Singapore has led to the group being called the Four Tigers. Taiwan, as well as enjoying a successful economy, has also done well to attract foreign investment from companies in all types of industries from around the world and this has been helped by the worldwide courier services that can be found online as they can help ensure that a parcel reaches its destination in the most cost effective and time efficient manner possible.

It hasn’t all been plain sailing for the island though as the political side of Taiwan is still uncertain with ownership not being confirmed. Previously owned by Japan, the island was surrendered after the Second World War and although no longer owned by the Japanese, the culture has stuck and you will therefore see many different cultures upon entrance into Taiwan.

If you are thinking of coming to Taiwan to teach English, then knowing in advance where the best job opportunities are might make your stay more beneficial. This is especially true if you plan on staying in Taiwan for a long time. Not every city has good job opportunities. One thing you should keep in mind when looking for jobs is how long you plan on staying. It might be useful to know where the best chances are of finding the best teaching opportunities.

The capital of Taiwan, Taipei, has to be the number one place for the best teaching opportunities. Taipei is the best place to look for work because it has the highest demand for foreign teachers. Taipei is where the money and brains, or most of it, is centered in Taiwan. Most of the famous universities and more opportunities to teach adults and business type students can be found in Taipei. The potential to earn good money is also greater in Taipei. However, you’ll also face much steeper competition for these high paying and better teaching positions. Everyone knows Taipei is where it is at so expect to be up against some very qualified and equally motivated individuals who want the same position as you may be applying for.

Taipei isn’t the only place you’ll find some good teaching opportunities. Two other cities, Kaohsiung and Taichung, also have a wide variety of universities and the opportunity to find some above average jobs. However, these two cities pale in comparison to Taipei and you won’t find as nearly as many positions available. Furthermore, don’t expect to be paid as much as you would working in Taipei. Kaohsiung has Taiwan’s largest port and is a hub of industrial activity. Taichung is centered on the middle of the west coast and is also heavily populated. Being the 2nd and 3rd largest cities in Taiwan means there is a market and the opportunity to find work but don’t expect the same pay and conditions as you would in Taipei.

For anyone coming to Taiwan it helps to know where and what kind of work you can expect to find. There are three major cities each offers a unique market for anyone looking to teach English. The best opportunities for teachers can be found in Taipei. Jobs in Taipei usually pay the most, offer the best perks and being located in the capital of Taiwan means you’ll have the opportunities to network with other likeminded people.
